SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – Thurston High School has been put into lockdown due to a threat against the school on Friday, Springfield Public Schools officials said.

SPS officials announced the lockdown in the morning of October 25. Thurston High School was put on lockdown due to a threat to the school, and Springfield Police Department responded to the school. Later in the morning, SPS announced the school would remain on lockdown for the rest of the day, and students would stay sheltered-in-place to ensure their safety. However, SPS also said they would conduct a "controlled release" of students starting at 12:40 p.m. Students will be released to their normal mode of after-school transportation. Students who ride the bus will be taken to the cafeteria for lunch before boarding the bus at their normal time, school officials said.

Thurston Middle School, Thurston Elementary School, and Ridgeview Elementary School were put into a lockout out of an abundance of caution. SPS officials said no one is allowed into or out of school buildings while the lockdown and lockouts are in place. They urged the public not to go to the schools.

Springfield police said they are actively investigating threats made to schools in the area, and officers are at Thurston High School out of an abundance of caution. School officials said Springfield police have a large presence at the schools, and are diligently investigating the threat.

Springfield Public Schools said they will share more information as it becomes available, including when the lockdown and lockout are lifted. KEZI 9 News has also contacted Springfield police for more information. Stick with us for more details as they come to light.
